Where ThousandEyes is better

  • It tests SIP and RTP from agent to agent, which helps when the question is about the network between two points of your own company, not about the public number.
  • It is a Cisco product, and the voice tests are one part of it.

What is the difference between ThousandEyes and Monitor?

Who calls whom. In the voice tests of Cisco’s ThousandEyes, the call goes from one agent to another: they are SIP Server, RTP Stream and Voice Call tests. In the documentation for those tests, we found no dialing to the public telephone network (PSTN) or to an IVR. Monitor does the opposite: it calls your 0800 number, your IVR and your SIP trunk from outside, the way a customer does, and checks the answer, the message and the audio quality.

When should I choose ThousandEyes?

When the question is about the network between two points of your own company, for example between a branch and the voice server, and you already have, or want, agents installed at those points. For that, an agent-to-agent test is the right format. What else ThousandEyes measures, and how it alerts and charges, the documentation we read does not say, which is why several cells in the table are marked as not verified.

Where does Monitor fit?

In the question the internal network does not answer: does the number your customer dials answer? Monitor calls 0800, 0300 and 4004 numbers and SIP trunks from Brazil, records the reference greeting of the IVR and judges each call by whether it was answered, whether it played the right message and the MOS-LQO of the received audio; see voice quality. A confirmed failure climbs by email, tier by tier, until someone takes ownership; see alerts and escalation. Every month an SLA report arrives. See how it works.

For a tool that watches networks and servers, see Monitor by 2N5 and PRTG.

How much does each one cost?

We did not verify ThousandEyes pricing. Monitor publishes monthly plans in US and Canadian dollars, set by the number of monitored channels and daily tests per channel; the Enterprise plan is on request. Frequently asked questions

Does ThousandEyes call an 0800 number or an IVR?

In the ThousandEyes voice tests documentation, we found no dialing to the public telephone network (PSTN) or to an IVR: the tests it describes (SIP Server, RTP Stream and Voice Call) run agent to agent. Monitor calls 0800, 0300 and 4004 numbers the way a customer does and checks the IVR greeting.

Is ThousandEyes suited to monitoring a SIP trunk?

It has a SIP Server test and an RTP Stream test, both agent to agent. What a test like that says about the carrier's public number, we did not verify. Monitor calls the trunk from outside and shows whether a real call completes, with the voice checked.

Can I use ThousandEyes and Monitor together?

They may answer different questions. An agent-to-agent test looks at the path between two of your points; Monitor calls the number the way your customer does and alerts the team by email when the call fails. Whether the two integrate, we did not verify.
