Monitor by 2N5 or Obkio for internet link monitoring?

Choose Obkio if you want a dedicated tool for agent-based synthetic network monitoring. Choose Monitor if you want each site's internet link tracked alongside the test calls to 0800 numbers, IVRs and SIP trunks, in a service managed by 2N5, and to know whether an outage was the link or the voice circuit.

Where Obkio is better

  • It is a product dedicated to agent-based synthetic network monitoring.
  • It shows a VoIP MOS estimate within the same network monitoring.

What is the difference between Obkio and Monitor?

Obkio is an agent-based synthetic network monitoring platform, with a VoIP MOS estimate. Monitor’s data circuits module also uses one agent per site, but it exists to answer the first question of every telephony outage: was it the internet link or the voice line? That is why each branch’s link is tracked alongside the test calls to the voice circuits, in a service managed by 2N5. See internet link monitoring.

When should I choose Obkio?

When what you need is a network monitoring tool in itself, with agents, and without the telephony side. What else Obkio measures, how it alerts and what it costs, the page we read does not say, which is why several cells in the table are marked as not verified.

What does Monitor’s data circuits module do?

An agent that 2N5 installs on a computer at the site, over remote access and with written authorization, measures latency, packet loss, jitter, DNS time and the actual speed of the link. It opens no inbound port: it only sends the measurements to 2N5. The measurements appear in charts of the last 100 hours on each data circuit’s page and are kept for 13 months. A confirmed link outage opens an incident and climbs the same alert ladder as the voice circuits. At a site where the agent cannot be installed, 2N5 tests the link from outside, with a simpler check that only says whether the site answers.

Each voice circuit can be linked to the site’s link. With the option to wait for the link, the voice alert waits while the link has an open outage, and your team gets one alert about the link instead of one per voice circuit. Voice is measured with real test calls, using the MOS-LQO of the received audio; see voice quality and SIP trunk monitoring. See how it works.

How much does each one cost?

We did not verify Obkio’s pricing. Monitor publishes monthly plans in US and Canadian dollars, set by the number of monitored channels and daily tests per channel; the Enterprise plan is on request. Frequently asked questions

Does Obkio measure the MOS of a real call?

Obkio shows a VoIP MOS estimate, within its agent-based synthetic network monitoring. We did not verify whether it dials a number and measures the received audio. Monitor places real test calls and measures MOS-LQO on the audio that arrived, against each number's reference recording.

What does Monitor measure on the internet link?

Latency, packet loss, jitter, DNS response time and the actual connection speed, through an agent that 2N5 installs on site. A confirmed link outage opens an incident and climbs the same alert ladder as the voice circuits. The agent never collects files, browsing or the content of the traffic.

Obkio or Monitor for several branches?

If the need is network only, with a synthetic monitoring tool you run yourself, Obkio is described for that. If you also need to know whether each branch's 0800 number and SIP trunks answer, and want 2N5 to run the service, Monitor puts the link and the voice together.
